On September 18, 2024, a Patriotic Rosary was said for the United States of America, the states as well as those in political office at St. John Neumann in Canton, MI. Special prayers were included as well as a patriotic song after each decade of the Rosary. The Color Corps from Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 as well as St. Francis of Assisi 2136 was on hand to post and retrieve the colors before and after the Rosary. [September 18, 2024]
On Friday, July 26, 2024, our assembly held the 2024 Patriotic Golf Outing at Fellows Creek Golf Course in Canton. Proceeds benefits veterans charities as well Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Charity. Eighty golfers participated in the event chaired by SK Joe Bradley. Much thanks not only to the participating golfers but also to our sponsors and volunteers that helped make this event a success! On Thursday through Sunday, September 14 through 17, 2022, members of our Assembly participated in a charity poker fundraiser to help the charities we support. Over the four days, 20 Sir Knights from our Assembly gave of their time to make it all happen. A special thanks to John MacLean, the principal officer of the fundraiser that worked a lot of hours with the Michigan Gaming Control Board to make sure we had our paperwork in order and permits in place. Through his efforts, we will increase the amount of support we provide our charities. [September 17, 2023]
On Sunday, June 1, 2023, Sir Knights from Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 joined council knights and other parishioners at St. John Neumann Parish to participate in a procession following Corpus Christi Mass. The Rosary was said while Fr. Paul and Fr. Paulo carried the Monstrance with the Host. [June 11, 2023]
On Monday, May 29, 2023, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights and family members, along with members of Fr. Victor J. Renaud council 3292, recognized veterans that participated in the Plymouth Memorial Day Celebration. As veterans drove by the council hall, members recognized them for their service.

On May 21, 2023, Color Corps members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536, Msgr. Francis F. Van Antwerp Assembly 0475 and Msgr. Schulte Assembly 0492 joined with parishioners of the Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn for their annual Special Needs Mass. Special Olympians where on hand at the celebration, were lectors for the first and second reading, and also read the mass intentions. [May 21, 2023]
On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, members of the Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 Color Corps participated in the 11:00am Blue Mass held at St. John Neumann in Canton. About a dozen first responders were at the mass held to honor those that put their life on the line for the community every day. SJN provided refreshments for everyone after the Mass. On December 17, 2022, members of Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 Color Corps, Msgr. Schulte assembly 0492 and 2136 St. Francis of Assisi Color Corps were joined by the American Legion Post 32 Livonia Honor Guard, State Chaplain Aidan Logan, State Deputy Chris Kolomjec, Archdiocesan Chaplain Paul Ballien, and State Warden Dan Fuller for Wreaths Across America at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights. After the ceremony, over 700 wreaths were placed on veterans graves to help remember the service they gave to our country. [December 17, 2022]

On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, a Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony was held at War Memorial Park in Plymouth, MI. Assembly Knights of Columbus members showed up to show support for the veterans gathered for the service. [December 7, 2022]
Sir Knight Ron Rathbun travels to the Philippines each year. Not only does he make donations on behalf of Knights of Columbus councils in our area, this year he took and presented chalices to needy priests.
These are the second and third chalices, presented to Fr. JM and Fr. Arnel. Both are Redemptorist priests. They were presented after the first agraneldo mass at the Scalla Retreat house in Bacolod. Argandeldo masses are early morning masses that start 9 days before Christmas. They usually start at 3 or 4 am in the morning. Everyone attends. However, the mass at Scalla started at 5 am and this is the one Ron attended since it was in English.
Fr. JM is a young priest and works a lot with the youth. This mass had about 300 people attending. They were sitting outside on both sides of the church and out the front. [November 29, 2022]

On Saturday, May 14, 2022, Knights of Columbus members from across Michigan gathered in Lansing at our state’s capital building on the front lawn for the annual Living Rosary. Over 60 Sir Knights, along with Knights of Columbus State Officers, participated in the event. State Chaplain Fr. Paul Ballien helped lead the rosary. Additionally, four members of our Pope John XXIII Knights of Columbus assembly were part of the Color Corps. [May 16, 2022]
On May 13, 14 and 15, 2022, members of our assembly joined American Legion Post 391 for their annual poppy fundraiser to benefit veterans. [May 13, 2022]
On April 7, 2022, the Knights of Columbus Silver Rose was on display at St. John Neumann in Canton. Members of our Color Corps stood guard over the relic. A short play about Our Lady of Guadalupe, a movie about Our Lady of Guadalupe and a prayer service followed the time for veneration and silent prayer. [April 7, 2022]

At the December 2021 meeting, SK Richard Fullmerhouser was recognized as Sir Knights of the Month for the previous November. Richard helps quite a bit at both St. Edith as well as the Retired Priest Village at Madonna University. Our Faithful Friar, Fr. In October and November, 2021, our assembly headed up an effort to collect snacks and drinks for the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center clinics in Detroit. Members of the assembly delivered the items on November 23, 2021. Brother Jerry Heise (St. John Neumann council 16169), Terry McMillian, and Sir Knights Ray Walker, Gene Suchyta and Joe Bradley delivered over 1200 pounds of snacks and drinks.

On November 11, 2021, at 11:00AM, members of our assembly gathered in Plymouth's War Memorial Park to witness Veteran's Day remembrance activities. Veteran's Day was originally called Armistice Day and celebrated the cessation of hostilities of the First World War. Our very own Master Emeritus Frank Pawelak, also a member of American Legion Post 391 Passage-Gayde, lead the pledge of allegiance.
Our assembly is always humbled and honored to be able to support veterans and troops of our great country. [November 11, 2021]
On October 31, 2021, State Chaplain Rev. Paul Ballien celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit in honor of the 1st anniversary of the Beatification of Fr. Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. Along with the State Deputy, State Secretary and State Treasurer, the Fourth Degree was invited. Members of Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 participated in the Mass that was followed by an Exemplification of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. [October 31, 2021]
A member of St. Edith, brother Mark Steinhauer inherited a chalice and paten from close friend Rev. Mike Newhouse upon Fr. Mike's passing a few weeks ago. Both Fr. Mike and brother Mark asked that the chalice and paten be given a good home. Members of our assembly gladly accepted the task and received the chalice. On Saturday, September 11, 2021, Michigan District 1 exemplified 29 new Sir Knights. State Board members joining us for the event included State Deputy SK Walter Winkle, Jr., and Lady Karen, State Treasurer SK Barry Borsenik and State Advocate SK Charlie McCuen. From the Fourth Degree, Master Michigan District 3 SK Larry Herman and Lady Jennifer as well as Master Ohio District 1 SK Robert Solomon and Lady Karen joined Master Michigan District 1 SK Mark Brezenski and Lady Janice. The Exemplification's class honoree were the 9/11 victims from 20 years ago.

On Monday, July 26, 2021, Color Corps members our assembly joined with other members of Michigan District 1 and participated in the Ste. Anne Feast Day Mass and celebration, concluding the Novena to Ste. Anne at the Basilica of Ste. Anne's de Detroit. Every year it late July, Ste. Anne de Detroit holds a novena that also celebrates the various cultures in the area, and culminates with a Mass celebrated on the Feast of Ste. Anne. Archbishop Alan Vigneron was the presider at the Mass, and celebrated the 46th anniversary of his ordination. [July 26, 2021]
On Tuesday, July 20, 2021, our assembly had it's first annual Patriotic Golf Outing at Fox Creek Golf Course in Livonia, followed by a steak lunch at George F. Monaghan Knights of Columbus Hall in Livonia. Forty-one golfer participated in the fundraiser. Chaired by Sir Knights Bill Dolunt and Joe Bradley, this new annual event will help our assembly continue to support various veterans-related charities. [July 21, 2021]
On Sunday, July 18, 2020, members of our Color Corps joined with other Assemblies at Ste. Anne de Detroit for a celebration of Celtic culture and the Novena. Every year it late July, the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit holds a novena that also celebrates the various cultures in the area. Our Sir Knights were honored to be a part of this one. On July 18, 2021, members of our Color Corps visited Msgr. Kosanke at the Basilica of Ste. Anne in Detroit, MI, just prior to one of the Ste. Anne Novena masses, to do some maintenance on their indoor flag poles. When doing some flag maintenance in June, it was noticed that none of the flag poles, including the US Flag, had appropriate toppers. These were ordered, and the new toppers were installed prior to mass - an Eagle with the US Flag pole, a cross on the Papal flag pole, and a spear point on the Michigan flag pole. [July 18, 2021]
On Sunday, July 11, 2021, members of Michigan District 1, including members of our assembly, were invited to participate in Archbishop Alan Vigneron's 25th Anniversary Mass. The archbishop was joined by auxilary bishops Donald Hanchon, Robert Fisher and Gerard Battersby as well as Chaldean Bishop Francis Kalabat. [July 11, 2021]
On Saturday, July 3, 2021, members of Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 joined other Michigan District 1 assemblies to march in the Wyandotte Independence Day Parade, this year held on July 3rd. Family members as well as the Knights on Bikes joined the Sir Knights. Host assembly 475 Msgr. Francis Van Antwerp and host council 1802 Wyandotte served as the gathering location both before and after the parade. [July 6, 2021]
On June 14, 2021, members of our Color Corps visited Msgr. Kosanke at the Basilica of Ste. Anne in Detroit, MI, to do some maintenance on their indoor US Flag. When the flag was replaced just prior to the COVID pandemic, we noticed it was attached to the pole with some flimsy wire. New flag pole bearings were placed on the the pole to make use and attachment easier, and also attach the flag to the pole in a fitting manner. Although we had also planned to replace the flag with what we felt was a more proper-sized flag, we choose not to take that action so that all the indoor flags would remain similar in size. On Monday, June 1, 2021, members of Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 presented a memorial chalice to Reverend Father John Dudek. Father John was recently ordained on May 15, 2021 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit, MI. The chalice presented to Father John is engraved with the name of SK Tom G. Lee, past grand knight of Fr. Daniel A. Lord, SJ, council 3959 in Livonia, MI. Sir Knight Tom passed was in November, 2020.
In keeping with assembly tradition, a chalice was engraved with his name and was awaiting presentation to a needy seminarian or priest. Our fallen Sir Knight will be remembered whenever Father John says mass with this chalice. [June 1, 2021]
On June 1, 2021, Sir Knight William “BJ” Juadawlkis from Fr. Daniel A. Lord council 3959 was knighted by Master Emeritus Frank Pawelak. BJ participated in a virtual exemplification of Patriotism in the last six months. Congratulations, and welcome Sir Knight BJ Juadawlkis! [June 1, 2021]
At the June 2021 meeting, SK Chris Scanlan, FDD, PFN, was recognized as Sir Knight of the Year.
In addition to being a former district deputy and past faithful navigator, Chris was formerly on first, second and third degree exemplification teams. He regularly participates in council Tootsie Roll drives, assembly Adopt-A-Highway cleanup days and charity poker fundraisers. He is active in the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Alhambra Manresa Caravan, Knights of Equity and Sons of American Legion. Chris has been active at church as a the Mass audio person and tech person for outdoor Masses as well as singing in the choir. He has been a Eucharistic Minister trainer, altar server trainer, Worship Commission chairman, Vicariate delegate, usher, captain and vice-president of the Ushers Club.
For the assembly, Chris has served as admiral for the last four years and continues to handle shirts, hats, name badges and purchase of chalices.

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights, along with Scouts from Troop 743, retired about 50 United States of America flags in a ceremony held at Fr. Victor J. On Thursday, May 20, 2021, and Friday, May 21, 2021, members of our Color Corps participated in the Confirmation Masses at St. Thomas a'Becket Catholic Church. Auxiliary Bishop Gerard W. Battersby was the presider, with over 80 young adults Confirmed into the Catholic faith. Because of the COVID protocols in place, two separate Confirmation Masses on two separate nights occurred. On Wedenesday, May 5, 2021, State Officers gathered at St. John Neumann in Canton, MI, to tape the Rosary and Mass that will be shown as part of the virtual State Convention later in the month. On April 25, 2021, members of our Color Corps participated in the Jubilarian Mass at St. Aidan. This mass celebrates wedding anniversaries that end in a zero (e.g., 30, 40, etc.) or five (e.g., 35, 45, etc.). [April 25, 2021]
On April 20, 2021, Sir Knights Charles Fay, Paul St. Clair and Dennis "DJ" Brunner from George F. Monaghan council 2690. All these Sir Knights participated in a virtual exemplification of Patriotism in the last six months and were knighted by Faithful Navigator Gene Suchyta. During the month of April, FN Gene Suchyta visited all the councils that helped with the February Detroit VA Hospital collection of comfort items. Through the generosity of the council members, the assembly was able to donate to the hospital over $2700 worth of comfort items. At the council meetings, the Patriotic Service Award was presented to the Grand Knight of the council in recognition of their help. [April 21, 2021]
On April 18, 2021, Sir Knights Joseph Carrier from St. Paul's council 2632 was knighted. Joseph participated in a virtual exemplification of Patriotism in the few months and was knighted by Faithful Navigator Gene Suchyta. Congratulations, and welcome Sir Knight Jospeh Carrier! [April 18, 2021]
At the April 2021 meeting, SK George Roumaya was recognized as Sir Knight of the Month. George is a marshal for Michigan District 1 and is very active in the Color Corps. Members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 commenced participation in the 2021 M-DOT Adopt-A-Highway roadway clean-up program. Appropriately socially distanced and protected, on the morning of April 17, we walked Plymouth Rd between Farmington Rd and Middlebelt Rd, removing bags of trash and debris, helping to make the community cleaner and safer. On April 14, 2021, the Knights of Columbus Silver Rose was on display at St. John Neumann in Canton. Members of our Color Corps were joined by our District Master Mark Brezenski and members of Msgr Schulte assembly 492 and St. Francis of Assisi assembly 2136 during the event to stand guard over the relic. A prayer service followed the time for veneration and silent prayer. [April 15, 2021]
On April 14, 2021, our Worthy District Master Mark Brezenski joined members of our Color Corps to visit and complete the knighting of Sir Knight Kevin Sullivan. In September 2020 Kevin was exemplified to the Fourth Degree in the first Michigan District 1 virtual services. Because of a myriad of issues, Kevin has been unable to attend a meeting with either his council or the assembly to complete the knighting. The District Master agreed to join our Color Corps to complete the knighting at his house with Lady Mimi looking on. Congratulations, and welcome Sir Knight Kevin Sullivan and Lady Mimi! On Monday, April 5, 2021, members of our Color Corps joined with St. Francis of Assisi assembly 2136 to help Mother of God Church celebrate Easter Monday Mass. After the Mass, a short play featured our District Marshal George Roumaya as one of the robbers that was crucified with Christ and was promised by Christ that he would be in paradise. [April 5, 2021]
On March 22, 2021, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 presented a memorial chalice to Fr. Sanharib Youkhana of the Chaldean diocese. The chalice presented to Fr. Sanharib is engraved with the names of SK Carl A. Provencal and SK Joseph R. Brescoll. Both of these Sir Knights passed away in 2019.
In keeping with assembly tradition, a chalice was engraved with their names and was awaiting presentation to a needy seminarian or priest. Our fallen Sir Knights will be remembered whenever Fr. Sanharib says mass with this chalice. [March 22, 2021]

Just prior to the March 2021 assembly meeting, District Master Mark Brezenski presented to Sir Knight Dennis Lipski District Sir Knight of the Year for the 2019-2020 Fraternal Year. Dennis is commander as well as our assembly and district VAVS representative. He is also a past faithful navigator of the assembly. He has worked as a lay minister in the prison system, donating yarn to female prisoners and then donating the results of their work to VA hospital patients. Dennis helps at church with faith formation for 8th graders, is a sacristan and eucharistic minister. As a color corps member he participates in parades, funerals and other events. Just prior to the March 2021 assembly meeting, District Master Mark Brezenski presented to Lady Joyce Hansen District Lady of the Year for the 2019-2020 Fraternal Year. Joyce has help make and transport auction donations to the state convention for the past 10 years, and has made auction donations for the Spring Exemplification. Joyce has also been involved with Relay for Life, food pantries and the Christmas Holy Cross Services collection. She has assisted in packing rosaries and donating items for the military packing party in the fall. Finally, she recently became the Director of Evangelization and RCIA at St. John Neumann. All of the items collection in February 2021 for the VA Medical Center in Detroit were delivered by members of our Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 on Friday, March 5, 2021. Sir Knights Ray Walker, Ray Busuttil, Dennis Lipski, Ed Hurst and Gene Suchyta delivered 40 boxes filled with over 150 jigsaw puzzles, 50 games, 1000 puzzle, crossword, sudoku and word search books, 100 pens and pencils and 350 small snacks (a last-minute ask from the VA Hospital).

At the Febuary 2021 meeting, SK Phil Bustos was recognized as Sir Knight of the Month. Phil is Grand Knight of Immaculate Conception council 4513 in Garden City. Since becoming a Sir Knight, Phil has stepped up to be a trustee numerous times. Additionally, Immaculate Conception and St. Thomas the Apostle Church have been very helpful and generous in our games and books collection for the VA Hospital in Detroit. On December 19, 2020, members of Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 Color Corps and members of Msgr. Schulte assembly 0492 Color Corps were joined by Hennepin Province Vice Supreme Master Clifford Wasmund for Wreaths Across America at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights. After the ceremony, 950 wreaths were placed on veterans graves to help remember the service they gave to our country. [December 19, 2020]

On Saturday, October 31, 2020, members of Michigan District 1, including a member of our assembly, George Roumaya, participated in a procession in Downtown Detroit honoring the beatification of the Knights of Columbus founder Fr. At the October meeting, SK O. J. Lenze II was recognized as Sir Knight of the Month. O. J. helped with the MDOT Adopt-A-Highway trash pickup on October 3 and by himself accounted for about 1/3 of all the trash that was picked up. Additionally, O. On Saturday, October 10, at 12:00pm, Sir Knights from our Color Corps, along with Sir Knights from St. Francis of Assisi assembly 2136, joined in a Eucharistic Procession and Rosary at St. John Neumann in Canton, MI. This event was put on in conjunction with the America Needs Fatima Campaign. The Eucharistic Procession and Rosary began at the front doors of St. John Neumann included both knights as well as families and parishioners. [October 10, 2020]

On Sunday, September 20, 2020, Sir Knights from Michigan District One gathered at the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit for the Mass of Thanksgiving where the Basilica proclamation was read. Archbishop Allen Vigneron presided over the Mass with Auxiliary Bishop Don Hanchon also concelebrating.

On September 17, 2020, following the 9:00am Mass, a Patriotic Rosary was said for the United States of America, the states as well as those in political office at St. John Neumann in Canton, MI. Special prayers were included as well as a patriotic song after each decade of the Rosary. On Saturday, August 29, 2020, Color Corps members from our assembly joined other Michigan District One Color Corps members to participate in the installation of State Officers at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Marysville, MI. Our new State Deputy, Former District Master Walter Winkle, installed State Officers, State Directors, Diocesan Directors, and District Deputies. A reception was held afterwards at Knight Club. On Saturday, August 29, 2020, Color Corps members of our assembly joined others from Michigan District One to pay their final respects to Former District Master Fred Sleeman at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Utica, MI. Members of the Macomb County Veterans Ritual Team were also on hand, as Fred was a veteran of the United States Navy. [August 30, 2020]
On August 24, 2020, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 presented a memorial chalice to Rev. Marcus Shammami of the Chaldean diocese. Fr. Marcus was ordained on July 4, 2020, and we discovered he was in need of a chalice. The chalice presented to Fr. Marcus is engraved with the names of SK Orville Roberts and SK James Hughes, PFN. Both of these Sir Knights passed away in 2020.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2020, members of the Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 Color Corps participated in the 11:00am Blue Mass held at St. John Neumann in Canton. About a dozen first responders were at the mass held to honor those that put their life on the line for the community every day. [August 11, 2020]
On Sunday, July 26, 2020, members of our Color Corps joined with other Assemblies at Ste. Anne de Detroit for a celebration of Ste. Anne's Feast Day and the last day of the Novena. On Thursday, June 18, 2020, our assembly was joined by members of Cub Scout Pack 11169, Great Lakes Field Service Council, Mahican District, for a Flag Retirement Ceremony. A number of our assembly officers were in attendance as we retired ten United States flags that were deemed to be no longer serviceable. [June 19, 2020]
On both Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 2020, members of the Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 Color Corps participated in the Corpus Christi Mass and Process that occurred after the Saturday, 4:00pm Mass and the Sunday, 9:30am Mass. Rev. Greg Piatt, a new member of our assembly, was the presider. Additionally Deacon Steve Morello, also a new Fourth Degree Sir Knight and member of our assembly, assisted. [June 14, 2020]
On May 13, 2020, members of our Color Corps visited Ste. Anne Parish in Detroit to help Msgr. Charles Kosanke retire the current indoor United States of America flag and raise a new flag in its place. In keeping with social distancing directives currently in place, only two other Sir Knights from the assembly were asked to participate: Commander Dennis Lipski and Pilot Joe Bradley. Lady Kathy Suchyta was on hand to take photos as we transitioned the flags.
Msgr. Kosanke was very excited to receive the new flag. The old flag was found behind the alter and was not on display. The new flag is once again visible to the congregation. [May 13, 2020]
On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, a Chalice with the name of SK Chet Ostrowski, PFN, engraved on it was presented to transitional deacon Drew Mabee from Our Lady of Good Council Church in Plymouth. Drew is scheduled to be ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 8, 2020, and is also scheduled to be assigned to Oakland University.
In keeping with the social distancing and gathering directives in place, the ceremony was performed outdoors in the grotto at Our Lady of Good Council. Additionally, only two other Sir Knights from the Color Corps were asked to participate -- Commander Dennis Lipski and Pilot Joe Bradley. Also in attendance were Margaret Ostrowski and Margaret and Chet's grandson Conner, as well as John Galindo, DGK of Dr. Thomas A. Dooley Council 5492, Chet's home council. At the April 2020 General Assembly meeting, SK Richard Fullmerhouser was named Sir Knight of the Month for April. With COVID-19 in full swing, Richard has been delivering food to the retired priests at the village north of Madonna University. Richard has also been doing odd jobs for them as well. At the April 2020 General Assembly meeting, Rev. Richard Leliaert was named Sir Knight of the Month for March. In February, Fr. Richard was kind enough to offer up a Memorial Mass for our fallen Sir Knights at Renaud Hall prior to our February meeting. As our Faithful Friar, we are blessed with Fr. On Saturday, March 7, 2020, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 joined with other Fourth Degree Assemblies to Exemplify Third Degree Knights to the Fourth Degree. As a fundraiser, baskets were raffled after the Exemplification. Two baskets, one created and donated by Master Emeritus Frank Pawelak and Lady Joan, as well as another donated by the Assembly and Pope John Ladies, were included in the raffle to help raise funds for the District Master and for the religious education program at District Friar Eric Fedewa's Parish.

On Sunday, February 16, 2020, Sir Knight Steve Earles was awarded Sir Knight of the Month for January (Steve was unable to attend that meeting) and Ed Hurst, Jr., was awarded Sir Knight of the Month for February. Since transferring into the assembly Steve, has attended numerous Color Corps functions along with his son, Josh. On Sunday, February 16, 2020, members of our assembly, gathered at Fr. Victor J. Renaud Council Hall for our annual Memorial Mass. Our Worthy Faithful Friar, Rev. Richard Leliaert, presided over a Mass that remembered those Sir Knights that passed away between November 1, 2018 and Octboer 21, 2019. The Chalice that was engraved in rememberance of SK Chet Ostrowski was blessed and used for the Mass. [February 16, 2020]

On Saturday, December 14, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 joined with Msgr. Shulte Assembly 0492 to honor fallen veterans as part of Wreaths Across America at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn, MI. In attendance were representatives from veterans organizations, civic organizations, service organizations, schools and churches, as well as Congresswoman Debbie Dingell. After the ceremony, 900 wreaths were placed on veterans graves to commemerate and remember the service they gave to our country. [December 14, 2019]
On Saturday, December 7, 2019, Sir Knights Frank Pawelak, Joe Bradley and Gene Suchyta, joined by brother Harvey from Fr. Daniel A. Lord, S.J. Council 3959, helped members of rhe Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks pack and wrap about 1000 gifts for Veterans. [December 7, 2019]
On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, Sir Knight Joshua Earles was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Since transferring into the assembly with his dad, Steve, Josh purchased the new uniform and has attended 10 Color Corps events. Congratulations, Josh! [December 3, 2019]
On Sunday, November 24, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 Color had two assignments. First, at St. Aiden in Livonia we joined with Sir Knights from St. Francis of Assisi Assembly 2136 for the Red, White and Blue Mass celebrated by Fr. Kevin. There was a great turnout of Sir Knights as well as members of the Livonia Police Force.
Later in the day, we joined with Msgr. Schulte Assembly 0492 for the Pastor Installation by Bishop Battersby at The Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn. [November 24, 2019]
On Saturday, November 23, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 joined with Sir Knights from St. Francis of Assisi Assembly 2136 and St. George Chaldean Assembly 3408 to celebrate the elevation of Fr. Toma Azizo to Chorbishop by Bishop Yousif Benham Habashand. Archbishop Vigneron was also in attendance. [November 23, 2019]
On Sunday, November 17, 2019, Sir Knights Ed Shaheen and Dennis Lipski were awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Ed Shaheen collected about 100 coats by talking to parishioners, friends and relatives. Dennis did yeoman's work travelling to the collection sites for three weeks and storing over 400 coats at his house until we could sort them. Congratulations, Ed and Dennis! [November 17, 2019]
On Monday, November 11, 2019, members of our Assembly joined veterans at War Memorial Park in Plymouth for the annual Veterans Day ceremony. The weather reminded some of what our troops endured at Bastogne in World War II and at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. City leaders as well as commanders of the veterans organizations spoke for a few minutes as we remembered those that have served out country. [November 11, 2019]
On Thursday, November 7, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 and other Knights of Columbus Councils joined with the Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks and the American Legion to serve steak lunches to veterans. Over a dozen Knights were able to join, a great showing to support those that served our country. The Assembly also contributed to help defray the cost of the luncheon. Over 75 lunches were served. On Sunday, November 3, 2019, Sir Knights and Ladies of Michigan District One gathered for the annual Fall Harvest. At the Packing Party, Ladies of the district help pack over 160 boxes for troops overseas. At the District Meeting, the Master, Vice Supreme Master and State Warden addressed members of the District. After dinner, Master Mark Brezenski and Vice Supreme Master Clifford Wasmund present Civic Awards and Red, White and Blue Awards to those assemblies that earned those distinctions.

On Sunday, November 3, 2019, members of our Assembly, joined by Commander Ron Rabine of Bishop Kelley Assembly #490, particpated in the Mass and Brunch Fundraiser for the priest retirement village at the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel of the Felician Sisters of Madonna University. [November 3, 2019]
On Thursday, October 31, 2019, and Saturday, November 2, 2019, members of our Assembly along with American Legion Post 391 Passage-Gayde, delivered coats to Veteran's Haven in Wayne, House by the Side of the Road in Ann Arbor and Downriver for Veterans in Wyandotte. These coats will be distributed to veterans in our area. [November 2, 2019]
On Tuesday, October 29, 2019, members of our Assembly -- Sir Knights and Ladies -- along with some help from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6695 Mayflower Lt. Gamble and American Legion Post 391 Passage-Gayde, gathered to sort through all the coats collected in the Coats 4 Veterans drive. Over 600 coats were colected for veterans, with another 60 children's coats that will be donated to a local clothing drive. The 600 coats will be given to Veteran's Haven in Wayne, House by the Side of the Road in Ann Arbor and Downriver for Veterans in Wyandotte for distribution to veterans in our area. On Sunday, October 27, 2019, members of our Assembly, along with other Sir Knights from Michigan District One, gathered at Assumption Grotto Church in Detroit for the Extraordinary Pontifical Mass Enthroned celebrated by Cardinal Raymond Burke from Rome. [October 27, 2019]
On Sunday, October 20, 2019, Sir Knight Joe Bradley was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Not only is Joe active in the Color Corps, he is also the chariperson of our Charity Poker fundraiser which has helped our charitible contributions substantially. Congratulations, Joe! [October 20, 2019]

On Thursday through Sunday, September 19 through 22, 2019, members of our Assembly participated in a charity poker fundraiser to help the charities we support. Over the four days, 19 Sir Knights from our Assembly gave of their time to make it all happen. A special thanks to Joe Bradley, the principal officer of the fundraiser that worked a lot of hours with the Michigan Gaming Control Board to make sure we had our paperwork in order and permits in place. Through their efforts, we will increase the amount of support we provide our charities. [September 22, 2019]
On Sunday, September 15, 2019, Sir Knight Dennis Lipski was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Not only is Dennis our commander and active in the Prison ministry, he was also recently named the Michigan District One Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services (VAVS) representive to the VAVS committee. In addition, one of our Sentinals, Sir Knight Patrick Lowry, finally received his Sentinal jewel of office. Congratulations, Dennis and Patrick! [September 15, 2019]
On Saturday, September 14, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 joined with other Fourth Degree Assemblies to Exemplify Third Degree Knights to the Fourth Degree. As a fundraiser, baskets were raffled after the Exemplification. Two baskets, one created and donated by Master Emeritus Frank Pawelak and Lady Joan, as well as another created by Lady Kathy Suchyta and donated by the Assembly and Pope John Ladies, were included in the raffle to help raise funds for the District Master and for the religious education program at District Friar Eric Fedewa's Parish.

Boy Scout Nick Lowe completed his Eagle Scout Project -- a chapel Gazebo at Camp Liberty in Brooklyn, MI. Camp Liberty helps returning veterans and their families with an emphasis on assisting those with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. Donations from Knights of Columbus Councils and Assemblies, including ours, helped Nick complete this project. [August 13, 2019]

On Sunday, June 30, 2019, Pope John XXIII members, along with the Color Corps, joined members of St. John Neumann Council #16169 for Corporate Communion. This was also the last opportunity for Color Corps members to wear their regalia before being officially retitred by Supreme. [June 30, 2019]
On Sunday, June 23, 2019, Color Corps members from Michigan District One joined Color Corps members of the 5th Ontario District for a flag pole dedication at the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney Statue Site at Heavenly Rest Cemetery in Ontario, Canada. Those assembled marched to the flag pole site where Sir Knights were recognized for their service, the flag pole, flag and stature were blessed and the Knights of Columbus flag was raised on the new flag pole. On Sunday, June 23, 2019, members of our Color Corps participated in the Fr. Theo's Last Mass at St. Priscilla Catholic Church. Joining Sir Knights Gene, Joe and Glenn as the District Worthy Comptroller Norm Pranger from St. Francis of Assisi Assembly #2136. In July, Fr. Theo begins his assignment in the Cayman Islands. On Tuesday, June 11, 2019, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights, along with Scouts from Troop 743, retired none Unites States of America flags in a ceremony held at Fr. Victor J. Renaud Knights of Columbus Hall. These flags had reached their present state in proper service of respect, tribute, and in the memory of all who have served America. Also, thanks to members of Fr. Victor J. Renaud Council #3292 that assisted with the fire, attended the ceremony and allowed the use of their facility. [June 11, 2019]
On Sunday, June 9, 2019, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights, with help from St. Francis of Assisi Assembly #2136, participated two masses. Leading off was the first Mass fro Fr. Derik Peterman, a Sir Knight in our very own Assembly. The Mass was help at 10:00am at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, in Wesltand. Followng that was the annual Mass at the Motor City Irish Festival in Livonia, Michigan. A number of Sir Knights participated in both events. [June 9, 2019]
On Friday, June 7, members of our Color Corps participated in the Confirmation Mass at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church. Bishop Donald Hanchon was the presider, with about 130 young adults Confirmed into the Catholic faith. [June 7, 2019]
On June 4, Sir Knight John Filipiak was recognized as Sir Knight of the Year. John is our Faithful Pilot and has been involved in manya activities including picking up the 2019 M-DOT Adopt-A-Highway roadway clean-up program. On Monday, May 27, 2019, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights participated in the Plymouth Memorial Day Parade. All members of the Assembly were invited to participate, with non-Color Corps members carrying the flag and banner. [May 27, 2019]
On Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 joined with the other Michigan Assemblies and Districts for events at the State Convention. Fourth Degree Sir Knights participated in all three Holy Masses, posting as well as retiring the colors, the living rosary on the front lawn and guarding during Eucharistic Adoration. Joining the Michigan Fourth Degree Districts was Vice Supreme Master Cliff Wasmund from Hennepin Province. [May 25, 2019]

On Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31, 2019, Michigan District One Sir Knights stood guard over the relic of St. Jean Marie Vianney. The relic is in the United States and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. On Saturday, the relic was at St. John Vianney in Shelby Township. On Thursday, March 28, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 and other Knights of Columbus Councils joined with the Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks and the American Legion to serve steak lunches to veterans. Over a dozen Knights were able to join, a great showing to support those that served our country. The Assembly also contributed to help defray the cost of the luncheon. Over 120 lunches were served. On Sunday, March 24, 2019, our Assembly present to Reverend Derik Peterman a Chalice for use in Holy Mass. Reverend Derik is a Sir Knight in our Assembly as well as a transitional Deacon. He will be ordained at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit, Michigan on June 8, 2019 at 10:00am. The Chalice given to Derik is engraved with SK Larry Kenney's name. Larry was also a member of our Assembly and passed away in 2017.
The presentation of the Chalice was made after our March 2019 meeting. Many of the Sir Knights stayed after the meeting for the presentation. We were also joined by the Pope John Ladies. In all, about 40 people were at the ceremony. [March 24, 2019]
On Sunday, March 24, 2019, Sir Knight Ed Shaheen was named Sir Knight of the Month. Ed was active in recruiting Third Degree members to become Fourth Degree members. [March 24, 2019]

On Saturday, March 2, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 joined with other Fourth Degree Assemblies to Exemplify Third Degree Knights to the Fourth Degree. As a fundraiser, baskets were raffled after the Exemplification. On Sunday, February 24, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 Color Corps joined Msgr. Russell E. Kohler Council #15204 at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy for their Corporate Communion. [February 24, 2019]
On Tuesday, February 12, 2019, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 joined with other Fourth Degree Assemblies to honor former Congressional Representative John Dingell. The Funeral was held at the Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn, MI. In addition to the Knights of Columbus, Police and Military Honor Guards were present to pay tribute to John's years of service as a military veteran as well as a congressman. [February 12, 2019]
On Saturday, December 15, 2018, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 joined with Msgr. Shulte Assembly #0492 to honor fallen veterans as part of Wreaths Across America at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn, MI. In attendance were representatives from veterans organizations, civic organizations, service organizations, schools and churches. After the ceremony, 750 wreaths were placed on veterans graves to commemerate and remember the service they gave to our country. [December 15, 2018]
On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, Sir Knight John Filipiak was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Last September, John volunteered to lead the Adopt-A-Highway cleanup. Additionally, John regularly steps in for the Sentinals collecting for dinner as well as the 50-50 raffle. Congratulations, John! [December 4, 2018]
On Sunday, November 18, 2018, Sir Knight Joe Bradley, was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Joe volunteered to work with the Michigan Gaming Commission to get us approved to raise money for charitable work with Millionaire Parties, also known as Poker nights. Congratulations, Joe! On Sunday, November 18, 2018, many of the members of the Assembly stayed for a Thanksgiving dinner prepared by the Pope John Ladies. Turkey and ham, along with all the fixin's, was on the menu. Afterwards, the Turkey Trot game was played by many of those. Happy Thanksgiving to all! [November 18, 2018]
On Thursday, November 8, 2018, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly joined with the Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks and the American Legion to serve steak lunches to veterans. On Wednesday, October 2, 2018, Color Corps members of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 and Msgr. Schulte Assembly #0492 helped Sacred Heart School in Dearborn celebrate the 100th anniversary of the location and opening of the current school building. The Color Corps and representatives of the school gathered at the former school locaiton and processed to the current school location. A mass followed the procession. [October 3, 2018]

On Saturday, August 11, 2018, Gene Suchyta, Faithful Navigator of the Assembly, rode 150 miles on bicycle from Montague to Bay City, Michigan, fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Through efforts of members of the Assembly as well as Gene's family and friends, the Foundation received over $1000 in donations for Gene's ride. On Sunday, July 15, 2018, Faithful Trustee Dan Crowley was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Dan has been a Fourth Degree Sir Knight for 48 years, and has continued to be active in the Assembly. Memebers of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 continued the 2018 M-DOT Adopt-A-Highway roadway clean-up program. On the morning of July 14, we once again walked Plymouth Rd between Farmington Rd and Middelbelt Rd, removing bags of trash and debris, helping to make the community cleaner and safer.

On July 8, 2018, members of our assembly's Color Corps were present at St. John Neumann in Canton for Fr. Paul Ballien's installation mass. Also attending the mass we Immeidate Past State Deputy Ken Unterbrink. Bishop Gerard Battersby presided. [July 8, 2018]
On June 30, 2018, members of our assembly's Color Corps were present at St. Robert Bellarmine in Redford for Fr. Richard's last mass. [June 30, 2018]
On Tuesday, June 5, Sir Knight Chris Scanlan was named Sir Knight of the Year. Chris is an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Assembly, performing as District Deputy as well as being our Faithful Admiral. Chris continues to volunteer his time with Color Corps, the Officer Installation as well helping with other committees. Both he and his wife are active at church, and Chris was instrumental in helping the Assembly with fundraising this year. Thanks, Chris, for a job well done, and Congratultions! [June 5, 2018]
On June 2, 2018, members of our assembly's Color Corps were present at St. Thomas A'Becket in Canton for their confirmation mass. [June 2, 2018]
On Tuesday, May 29, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights joined with Boy Scout Troop 499 to retire worn United States of America flags. The scouts learned the history of the flag as well as the proper way to dispose of the flag. [May 29, 2018]
On Monday, May 28, Assembly 1536 Sir Knights participated in the Plymouth Memorial Day Parade. All members of the assembly were invited to participate, with non-Color Corps members carrying the flag and banner. [May 28, 2018]
On Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, May 26, 2018, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 joined with the other Michigan Assemblies and Districts for events at the State Convention. Fourth Degree Sir Knights participated in all three masses, presenting as well as retiring the colors, and the living rosary on the front lawn. Joining the Michigan Fourth Degree Districts was Vice Supreme Master Cliff Wasmund from Hennepin Province. [May 26, 2018]
On May 22, 2018, members of our assembly's Color Corps were present at St. John Neumann in Canton for their confirmation mass. [May 22, 2018]
On Sunday, May 20, 2018, Faithful Outer Sentinel John Filipiak was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Even though John injured his wrist, he still managed to make all the Renaud Fish Fry clean-up days for which he had committed. John has also been helpful with other activities in which the Assembly has been involved. Congratualtions, John! [May 20, 2018]

On Saturday, April 7, 2018, our Assembly had Corporate Communion, along with members of Dr. Thomas A. Dooley Council 5492, at St. Colette Church in Livonia. After the mass, SK Tony Marone was honored with a Chalice Ceremony. Pictured are some of the Sir Knights that were in attendance and participated in the ceremony, as well as members of Tony Marone's family.
The Chalice Ceremony is usually performed at the funeral home. Circumstances did not permit this, and we are grateful that Tony's family, as well as St. Colette, allowed us this opportunity.

On Thursday, May 3, 2018, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly joined with the Plymouth Elks and the American Legion to serve steak lunches to veterans. Over a dozen Knights were able to join, a great showing to support those that served our country. The Assembly also contributed to help defray the cost of the luncheon. [March 18, 2018]
On Sunday, March 18, 2018, we were informed that we had received a thank-you note from SK Derik Peterman. Derik is currently enrolled at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and is expected to be ordained a transitional deacon later this year in preparation for his ordination in 2019. [March 18, 2018]
On Saturday, March 17, State Secretary Ken Unterbrink, Vice-Supreme Master Cliff Wasmund, District Master John Hundiak and members of our Assembly, along with other Sir Knights from Michigan District One, participated in the St Patrick's Day Mass at Most Holy Trinity Church in Detroit. On Sunday, January 21, 2018, Faithful Scribe O.J. Lenze, II, PFN, was awarded Sir Knight of the Month. Although O.J. stepped down from being Faithful Commander at the end of 2017, he then stepped up to be the Faithful Scribe when Gene Suchyta vacated the office to become Faithful Navigator. OJ also volunteered to rewrite Special Practice #3 as well as help create a Chalice team. [January 21, 2018]

On Thursday, December 14, 2017, members of Pope John XXIII Assembly joined with the Msgr. Shulte Assembly for a Christmas Party. Also in attendance were the Worth Vice Supreme Master Cliff Wasmund with Lady Susan and Worthy Master John Hundiak with Lady Elizabeth.
Before dinner, Worthy Master John Hundiak presented Msgr. Shulte Assembly with the Star Assembly Award, the only Assembly in Michigan District 1 to receive such an award.
After dinner, the Msgr. Shulte LOTA handed out raffle prizes to lucky winners. Dancing followed.

While on a cruise to and around the Holy Land, SK and Marshal George Roumaya and his Lady Iman helped with mass on their cruise ship every day. [November 9, 2017]

On Sunday, November 5, 2017, members of Michigan District 1 assembled for the Fall Harvest meeting. Nine Sir Knights and seven Ladies of our assembly participated.
Not only were 175 boxes packed for Desert Angels to ship overseas to our troops, over $4000 was also collected.
Additionally, during the award portion, Pope John XXIII Assembly 1536 was recognized and presented with the Civic Award. [October 10, 2017]
On Sunday, November 5, 2017, members of our assembly, including 12 Color Corps, gathered at St. Robert Bellarmine for our annual Memorial Mass. After mass, chalices were presented to families of our Fourth Degree members that were called home this year and, because of circumstances, the presentation could not occur close to the time of passing. At the October 15, 2017, general assembly meeting, a special election was held to fill the position of Faithful Navigator. Faithful Scribe Gene Suchyta was elected to the position. [October 10, 2017]

At the September 17, 2017, general assembly meeting, FN SK Denny McCann awarded SK Jim Laco the SK of the Month Award for all the work he has done keeping our financial records in order for so many years, as well as his other efforts which include making sure all the proper information for exemplification is turned in on time. On Saturday, September 16, 2017, 3rd degree members from District 1 were exemplified to the 4th Degree by District Master John Hundiak. Vice-Supreme Master Clifford Wasmund was also in attendance.

On Saturday, August 12, 2017, John XXIII Assembly 1536 held their annual picnic at Stymelski Veterans Park in Livonia. Sir Knights and their Ladies, Brothers from 3rd degree councils and their wives, families and first responders from Livonia Police and Fire joined us for great food and great times! [August 12, 2017]
On July 22, memebers of Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 Color Corps joined the Color Corps of other assemblies as St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rochester had their annual "Christ in the Streets" Eucharistic Reception.

At the July 16, 2017, general assemmbly meeting, FN SK Denny McCann awarded SK Richard Fullmerhouser the SK of the Year award, for his work on assembly picnics for two years, our participation in the M-DOT Adopt-a-Road as well as fundraising. [July 16, 2017]
On June 9, members of our assembly delivered blankets to the Ann Arbor Veteran's Administration Hospital. The blankets were donated by female prisoners in a local correctional institution. SK Dennis Lipski, PFN, makes regular visits to the correctional institution as part of his prison vocation. [June 9, 2017]

At Mother of God Church, Bishop Francis of the Caldean Rite of the Catholic Church blessed and used for the first time the Chalice that was presented to Deacon Patrick Sitto who will soon be ordained. You may recall Deacon Sitto went to Iraq last year to minister to people that are being persecuted by ISIS. [April 24, 2017]

The April 20, 2017 Observer/Eccentric ran an article on SK Claude Centers, a member of our assembly that was recently honored by the Marine Corps League for his years of service to our country in World War II. Claude has been a Knight since August 1, 1949 and a Sir Knight since November 1, 1951. Much thanks to Claude for his service both to our country and to the Knights of Columbus. On April 6, 2017, members of our assembly joined the Plymouth Elks and American Legion Post 391 to serve a steak lunch to over 200 hospitalized and homeless veterans. [April 6, 2017]
