Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536

Supported Programs

Building the Domestic Church

Since its founding, the Knights of Columbus has been involved in evangelization. In 1948, the Knights started Catholic Information Service (CIS) in response to blatant anti-Catholic bias in other religious media in order to educate non-Catholics about the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church.

The Knights of Columbus of Pope John XXIII assembly 1536 actively supports the churches in our area not only through our councils but also through our Color Corps.

Many of the churches in the area have a Knights of Columbus kiosk with with CIS Booklets. Knowing how frustrating it can be when the last booklet is taken (and before the kiosk can be restocked), an online, PDF version, of each of the booklets is available.

Clicking here will take you to the Knights of Columbus Supreme website CIS booklets. At this webpage, you can view or download, in PDF format, most of the CIS booklets available in the Kiosk.

M-DOT Adopt-A-Highway

Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536 is a proud participant in the M-DOT Adopt-A-Highway program. Our stretch of highway is Plymouth Rd from Farmington Rd to Middlebelt Rd. We collect trash three times a year - in the spring, summer and fall. Sign-up is at one of the assembly meetings prior to the scheduled work day. Many hands make light work, and our participation is a visible sign of how we support the community.

Chalice Program

Knights of Columbus Assembly #1536 will, upon the death of a Sir Knight in good standing, donate a chalice to missionary or seminarian on behalf of the deceased Sir Knight. To be in good standing, the Sir Knight must a) be a member of the assembly for at least one year; and, b) is current, that is, dues are paid in full.

To take advantage of this benefit, the Sir Knight's next of kin MUST NOTIFY the assembly of the passing away of the Sir Knight before the funeral. With this notification, arrangements will be made to engrave the Sir Knight's name on the chalice. Additionally, the Color Corps will come to the funeral, guard the casket, pray the rosary and present the chalice.

Rosary Chain

Knights of Columbus Assembly #1536 has established a Rosary Chain to notify Sir Knights of the assembly when another Sir Knight passes away or there is an immediate need to contact the assembly. When a Sir Knight passes away, the chain will be activated and will be used to notify everyone when a) the rosary will be prayed; and, b) when the Color Corps will be needed to guard the casket.

The Faithful Navigator will send an email to all members when a Sir Knight passes away. This activates the Rosary Chain. There are a few people that do not have an email; they will receive a phone call.

If you do not have an email and will need a phone call, please contact SK Chris Scanlon at 734.525.0969.

Color Corps

The Color Corps is generally known as the face of the Knights of Columbus recognized instantly by the colorful plummage on their chapeau's and their capes and swords. Color Corps membership is limited to 4th degree Sir Knights, and as such only Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assemblies have a Color Corps.

The Color Corps represents the Knights at special church functions and other worthy public events. They also are called upon for casket guard and to pray the rosary when another 4th degree Sir Knight passes away. With the Chalice Program, the Color Corps at our assembly will also present a chalice, with deceased Sir Knight's name engraved on the inside, to a missionary or seminarian on behalf of the deceased.
