Pope John XXIII Assembly #1536

Life Celebration

The Passing of a Sir Knight

When a Sir Knight from our assembly goes on to Eternal Rest with God in Heaven, the rest of the Assembly would like the opportunity to help remember and celebrate his life.

Please contact any officer of the assembly and, with permission of the family, they will start the process (click here for a list of officers). Note that you can speak to any of the officers, and the first person you reach is the only person you need to notify.

Once contacted, the Assembly will verify that:

  1. The Sir Knight has been a Fourth Degree Sir Knight for at least one year; and,
  2. The Sir Knight is a Fourth Degree Knight in Good Standing with the Assembly (i.e. dues are paid and current).
Note that attendance at assembly or council meetings on a regular basis is NOT part of the criteria used.

Once verified, the Sir Knights of the Assembly, with permission of the family, will arrange for the following:

  1. Prayers for the repose of the soul of the Sir Knight and his name added to the Assembly prayer list.
  2. A casket watch at the funeral home by Sir Knights from the Assembly.
  3. A Sir Knight to lead the rosary at the funeral home.
  4. A Chalice Presentation will done at the funeral home or place of visitation. At the appropriate time a chalice, engraved with the name of the Sir Knight, will be given to a diocesan priest or missionary priest to use in celebration of the Holy Mass. This will be a priest that would not otherwise have a chalice to celebrate Holy Mass.
Note: Occasionally a family may make a request to have the chalice sent to a particular priest the family feels is in need. While the assembly will consider these requests, the final decision regarding the chalice's destination will be the assembly's.
  5. An Honor Guard at the Funeral Mass or the Memorial Mass (with the additional permission of the presiding priest).
Note, again, that this will occur only with permission of the family (and the permission of the presiding priest as appropriate).

If for some reason the Chalice Presentation cannot take place as noted above, the Assembly will make arrangements for a Chalice Presentation at a later date. Even so, please contact one of the Assembly officers to let them know a Sir Knight has joined with God in Heaven.
